Creating a routine for anything declares it automatically as “important.” Furthermore, science has proven that routines or regular habits support cognitive function, increase focus, and reduce stress. All good things! Why wouldn’t we want a routine for everything?
AND YET, many writers consistently complain (including yours truly) that life has a tendency to crowd out the opportunity to write regularly. Maybe you know exactly what I’m talking about. But—can we just tell the truth? It’s one you probably already know (just as I do): MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, WE USE BUSY AS AN EXCUSE—one that doesn’t really hold up if you look closely. There! I’ve said it! And now that the proverbial cat is out of the bag, let’s move forward to three necessities for creating and sticking to a writing routine.
Owning Your Writer Identity
We may not be able to justify setting up regular writing routines because—deep down—we may not actually believe we are truly writers. And here’s the truth. It’s found in Ephesians 4:1, which says, “As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.” We often confuse the word “writer” and “famous.” The two are not synonymous. I’ve been “writing” for decades and have never been particularly popular. And yet, God has opened doors of opportunity for me to have a very fulfilling calling. If you’re called to write, you know it. Own it and honor God by stepping out with your words. He will help!
Giving Your Words a Priority Place at Life’s Table
It’s not a matter of cramming a writing time block into your schedule. It’s more about accepting its importance and then letting those around you know that writing time has as much value as everything else. When you take it seriously enough, others are apt to do the same.
Developing a Willingness to Sacrifice
Yep, I said it. You may have to let go of your favorite television show, a spin through social media or even a trip to the movies with friends. Can you do that? Think in terms of every word offered as honoring the One Who supplied the gift of doing what so many others cannot.
Not everyone is meant to be a writer, but those who are find a way to fulfill their callings with the development of these three tools. They declare identity, priority, and purpose. And these things make God smile.
Are you ready to write regularly? Let’s throw away our excuses and get to it.
