Establishing a Christian Writers’ Group

Establishing a Christian writers’ group is a noble undertaking. The community formed can advance, inspire, and support writers in their unique calling. Those who join the group can go forth equipped to impact even more people through their written words.

Setting up a Christian writers’ group in my hometown has been one of the most worthwhile endeavors on my writing journey. In 2011, I chartered a chapter of Inspirational Writers Alive! (IWA!) in Taylor, Texas. From the turnout at the inaugural meeting to the members’ many achievements, Taylor IWA! astounded me. I was honored to establish the group and serve as president for 2 years.

I count myself truly fortunate to have had Martha Rogers encourage me to start Taylor IWA! As an author, teacher, and longtime IWA! leader, Martha offered invaluable guidance. In return, I am happy to also pass on wisdom from my experience. I hope the insight below will assist others who are considering creating a Christian writers’ group.

Envision the community of writers you would like to form.

I dreamed of creating a Christian writers’ group for months before establishing Taylor IWA! But my vision and preparation were essential to the formation of the group. The time and effort you invest up front will contribute to the success of your writers’ group.

Think about your group’s mission and how you all will accomplish it. For example, your group may offer Christian writers the chance to hone their craft and connect with others who share this special calling. Some groups welcome writers of various genres while others focus on a certain type of writing like fiction or poetry. Will you aim to attract beginners or welcome writers at all levels?

Decide when and where your writers’ group will meet.

Some groups of writers meet regularly at a bookstore, home, or library. Taylor IWA! gathered once a month in the fellowship hall of a local church. The time you choose will depend on your audience and their schedule.

The day, time, and meeting place can change over time to meet the needs of the group’s members. Some groups grow and develop new chapters in various locations. The evolution of groups has led to the virtual and in-person options some offer today.

Invite people to visit and join your writers’ group.

Aspiring and established writers you know will appreciate your personal invitation to visit and join the group. You can reach out to local churches, libraries, newspapers, radio stations, and schools/colleges to see if they will help get the word out about your group. Be sure to also submit your group’s name and details for inclusion in the annual Christian Writers Market Guide.

Clearly conveying the benefits of your group will help grow your membership. Will members learn from expert speakers, critique sessions, and newsletters? Will they have a chance to talk to published authors and editors? Will they receive discounts on conferences and workshops?

Enlist help from within your writers’ group.

You do not have to do everything yourself. Allowing other people to serve, using their gifts, will fulfill them and free you to give your absolute best to the group. Elected officers or volunteers can help with tasks such as hospitality, membership, prayer needs, programs, and more.

Establishing a Christian writers’ group holds rewards in store for you as well as for those who visit and become members. We learn the craft of writing and develop our unique skills and voice. We also form deep and lasting bonds with other writers. What is more, inspiration abounds in this incredibly special community of people.
